In a previous post, I talked about the history of DITA and how it came to be. And while the post received a number of likes and comments, it was from a birds-eye view. Sometimes, the most compelling stories come not from historical overviews but from the voices of those who were present at the creation, who wrestled with the challenges and championed the innovations that would reshape an entire industry.

A colleague of mine, Keith Schengili-Roberts, recently published two excellent articles on the birth of DITA in which he interviewed two of the people directly responsible for DITA’s development and evolution. These aren’t just technical documentation pioneers—they are the architects who transformed how organizations approach content creation, management, and delivery. I would be remiss as an amateur historian if I didn’t post links to these articles that take you directly back to the time that gave birth to DITA via the firsthand memories of Don Day and Michael Priestley.

Don and Michael will also talk about some of the other folks that brought DITA into the world, revealing the collaborative effort behind this groundbreaking standard. Their recollections offer unique perspectives on the problems they sought to solve, the resistance they encountered, and the vision that drove them forward. For anyone working with DITA today, these interviews provide essential context for understanding not just what DITA is, but why it was created and what it was designed to accomplish.
